Manuel Antonio National Park Wildlife: What You Can See

Manuel Antonio has the highest wildlife density of any national park in Costa Rica. Within its 19.83 square kilometers, the park is home to 109 species of mammals and 184 species of birds. Here is what you can realistically expect to encounter:

Manuel Antonio Park Monkeys

Three of Costa Rica’s four monkey species live here. White-faced capuchin monkeys are the most visible, bold and intelligent, they move in troops of 15 to 30. Howler monkeys are heard before they are seen, their roar carrying over a kilometer through the canopy. And finally, titi monkeys, a small and cute, endangered primate.

Manuel Antonio Park Sloths

Both two-toed and three-toed sloths inhabit the park. A certified guide with a spotting scope is essential for finding them, they are masters of camouflage in the high canopy.

Manuel Antonio Park Birds

With 184 species recorded, birdwatchers are in paradise. Look for scarlet macaws, toucans, motmots, woodpeckers, tanagers, and turkey vultures. Early morning visits yield the best sightings.

Manuel Antonio Park Marine Life

Dolphins are commonly spotted offshore. Migrating humpback whales pass through seasonally. Both Manuel Antonio Beach and Espadilla Sur have tidal pools rich with marine life and opportunities for snorkeling.

Other Wildlife Manuel Antonio Park

Raccoons, Black spiny-tailed iguanas, green iguanas, common basilisks, white-nosed coatis, armadillos, deer, and a remarkable variety of snakes and bat species round out the wildlife experience.

The Beaches of Manuel Antonio National Park

Four beaches lie within the park’s boundaries, each with its own personality.

Playa Manuel Antonio:  The jewel of the park. Calm, clear waters make it ideal for swimming and snorkeling. Tidal pools on either side teem with marine life. This is the most popular beach and gets busy by mid-morning, so arrive early.
Playa Espadilla Sur: A wide, long beach separated from Playa Manuel Antonio by the famous Punta Catedral tombolo. Less crowded than its neighbor, with stronger waves in some seasons, better for walking than swimming.
Playa Gemelas:  A secluded twin cove tucked between rocky outcrops, reached via a short trail. Far fewer visitors and a genuinely remote feel.
Playa Escondido:  The most hidden beach in the park, accessible only via a longer hike. Recommended for adventurous visitors who want solitude.

Trails and Hiking in Manuel Antonio

The trail system is well-marked, mostly flat, and family-friendly. The main loop connects the forested interior with the beaches and takes roughly 1 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace.

Punta Catedral Trail:  The only trail with significant elevation gain, this path climbs a headland between Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur. The reward is a panoramic viewpoint over the Pacific with views stretching south toward Dominical. Prime spot for scarlet macaw sightings in the early morning.
Mirador Punta Serrucho: A viewpoint trail offering dramatic coastal vistas.
Catarata Trail: Leads to a small waterfall visible during the rainy season.
Mangrove Trail: Runs parallel to the beaches through 18 hectares of mangroves, home to red, piñuela, and gentleman mangrove species.

The tip most guides give: hire a certified naturalist for the first two hours (7:00 AM to 9:30 AM), then spend the rest of the morning relaxing on the beach. The guide handles the wildlife spotting; the beach is your reward.
