Three of Costa Rica’s four monkey species live here. White-faced capuchin monkeys are the most visible, bold and intelligent, they move in troops of 15 to 30. Howler monkeys are heard before they are seen, their roar carrying over a kilometer through the canopy. And finally, titi monkeys, a small and cute, endangered primate.

Manuel Antonio Park Sloths

Both two-toed and three-toed sloths inhabit the park. A certified guide with a spotting scope is essential for finding them, they are masters of camouflage in the high canopy.

With 184 species recorded, birdwatchers are in paradise. Look for scarlet macaws, toucans, motmots, woodpeckers, tanagers, and turkey vultures. Early morning visits yield the best sightings.

Playa Gemelas:  A secluded twin cove tucked between rocky outcrops, reached via a short trail. Far fewer visitors and a genuinely remote feel.
Playa Escondido:  The most hidden beach in the park, accessible only via a longer hike. Recommended for adventurous visitors who want solitude.

Trails and Hiking in Manuel Antonio

The trail system is well-marked, mostly flat, and family-friendly. The main loop connects the forested interior with the beaches and takes roughly 1 to 2 hours at a leisurely pace.

Punta Catedral Trail:  The only trail with significant elevation gain, this path climbs a headland between Playa Manuel Antonio and Playa Espadilla Sur. The reward is a panoramic viewpoint over the Pacific with views stretching south toward Dominical. Prime spot for scarlet macaw sightings in the early morning.
Mirador Punta Serrucho: A viewpoint trail offering dramatic coastal vistas.
Catarata Trail: Leads to a small waterfall visible during the rainy season.
Mangrove Trail: Runs parallel to the beaches through 18 hectares of mangroves, home to red, piñuela, and gentleman mangrove species.

The tip most guides give: hire a certified naturalist for the first two hours (7:00 AM to 9:30 AM), then spend the rest of the morning relaxing on the beach. The guide handles the wildlife spotting; the beach is your reward.

Manuel Antonio Park Tickets, Hours, and Entrance Fees

Opening hours: Wednesday through Monday, 7:00 AM to 4:00 PM. The park is closed every Tuesday.
Entrance fees: $18 USD per adult, $5 USD for children under 12.
Important: Tickets must be purchased online in advance, They are not sold at the park entrance. During high season (December through April), book several days ahead, daily visitor numbers are strictly limited. Please ask your Casa Playitas concierge for help and information.
Parking: There is no parking at the park. Private lots are available near the entrance for approximately ₡4,000 to ₡5,000 per day. Be cautious of unofficial parking attendants.
